How to Read a Supplement Label Like a Sceptic
Proprietary blends, fairy dusting, and the difference between a certificate of analysis and a picture of one. A field guide to the back of the bottle.
In most markets, dietary supplements are regulated far more lightly than medicines. In the United States, under DSHEA, manufacturers do not have to demonstrate efficacy or obtain pre-market approval; the burden falls on regulators to act after a product is already on shelves. The EU and UK operate differently but are far from airtight.
That regulatory gap is where label literacy earns its keep. Here is what I check, in order.
1. Is there a proprietary blend?
If the panel lists "Focus Matrix — 750mg" followed by eleven ingredients, you have been told the total and nothing else. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so you know the first is the largest — you do not know whether it is 740mg of the cheapest component and ten sprinkles.
The industry term for this is fairy dusting: include enough of a fashionable compound to print it on the label, not enough to do anything.
2. Does the dose match the research?
Take the headline ingredient, find the human trials, and check the dose used. This takes about five minutes and eliminates a large share of products.
Common mismatches:
- A compound studied at 500mg, present at 50mg
- A compound studied as a specific standardised extract, present as unstandardised raw powder
- A compound studied in an intravenous or injected form, sold in a capsule with poor oral bioavailability
3. Which form is it?
Salt and ester forms differ substantially in absorption and in elemental content. Magnesium oxide is roughly 60% elemental magnesium by weight but poorly absorbed; magnesium glycinate is much better absorbed and lower in elemental content per gram. A label reading "Magnesium 400mg" may mean either, and the two are not equivalent.
The same applies across the shelf: different curcumin preparations, different iron salts, different B12 forms.
4. Is there third-party testing, and can you see it?
Look for NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or USP Verified. These involve independent testing for identity, purity and contamination.
A photograph of a certificate of analysis on the product page is not the same thing. Ask for a batch-specific CoA from an accredited laboratory, matched to the lot number on the bottle you actually own. Reputable manufacturers provide this. The response you get is itself informative.
5. What does the claim wording tell you?
Structure-function claims — "supports cognitive function", "promotes healthy inflammation response" — are permitted without efficacy evidence, and carry a disclaimer noting the regulator has not evaluated them. Disease claims are not permitted. Careful hedging in the marketing copy is a signal that the legal team knows exactly what the evidence does not support.
6. Who is selling it, and how?
An affiliate-heavy launch, a podcast tour, a discount code, and a founder story arriving simultaneously is a marketing budget, not evidence. It says nothing about whether the product works — but it tells you where the money went, and money spent on influencers is money not spent on trials.
The short version
Named doses, forms you can look up, independent batch testing, no blends. That filter removes most of the shelf, which is roughly the correct outcome.
