The Green Powder Industry Runs on Vibes

Seventy-five ingredients, one proprietary blend, an enormous podcast advertising budget, and not one randomised controlled trial of the finished product.

The greens powder category has grown into a substantial business built on a proposition that sounds unarguable: modern diets lack vegetables, so here is a scoop of concentrated vegetables.

The proposition is fine. The product mostly does not deliver on it, and the reasons are visible on the label.

The dosing problem

A typical serving is somewhere around 10-12 grams of powder. Into that goes a list of anywhere from forty to seventy-five ingredients — greens, fruit extracts, mushrooms, adaptogens, probiotics, digestive enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

Do the arithmetic. If sixty ingredients share twelve grams, and the bulking agents and the handful of genuinely dosed vitamins take most of it, the remainder is divided into portions measured in milligrams. Compare those to the doses used in the trials cited on the marketing page and the gap is usually one or two orders of magnitude.

The fibre problem

The most robustly evidenced benefit of eating vegetables is fibre, and the evidence there is strong — cardiovascular outcomes, colorectal cancer, all-cause mortality, across large cohorts and consistent with mechanism.

A serving of greens powder contains, typically, one to two grams of fibre. Recommended intake is around 30 grams a day. A single apple beats a scoop.

Vegetables also deliver water, volume, satiety and a food matrix that appears to matter — the repeated failure of isolated micronutrient supplements to reproduce the benefits of the foods they came from is one of the most consistent findings in nutrition research.

The evidence problem

I have looked for randomised controlled trials of finished greens products. There are a small number, generally small, short, industry-funded, and reporting surrogate outcomes — antioxidant markers, self-reported energy.

What the marketing typically cites instead is research on individual ingredients, at doses the product does not contain, in populations that are not you.

The testing problem

These are plant concentrates, and plants concentrate what is in their soil. Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic — have repeatedly turned up in independent testing of the category. Concentration is the entire point of the product, and it does not discriminate.

Third-party certification for contaminants is the minimum to ask for. Plenty of brands do not have it.

Where a greens powder is defensible

Two situations, both narrow. Travel, where actual vegetables are genuinely hard to obtain for a stretch. And as a covert vehicle for vitamins — if the label discloses meaningful, named doses of specific vitamins, you are effectively buying a multivitamin with a vegetable-flavoured story attached, which is at least an honest transaction once you see it that way.

The alternative

Frozen vegetables. Nutritionally comparable to fresh, sometimes better because they are frozen at peak, cheap, and they keep. A bag of frozen spinach costs less than a serving of powder and contains more of everything the powder is meant to represent.

That is not a satisfying answer and no one is going to sponsor a podcast to deliver it.
