Your Bedroom Is Probably Too Warm
Of all the sleep variables you can control, ambient temperature is the cheapest, the best understood, and the one most people have set wrong.
Sleep onset is preceded by a drop in core body temperature of around one degree Celsius. This is not incidental — the fall is part of the mechanism. The body sheds heat through the hands and feet, core temperature declines, and sleep pressure converts into actual sleep.
A warm bedroom makes that harder. The body still tries to dump heat, cannot, and the result is a longer time to fall asleep and more awakenings once you have.
The number
The commonly cited range for a sleeping adult under a light cover is roughly 17-19°C (about 63-66°F). That is colder than most people keep a bedroom and considerably colder than most people find comfortable while awake and dressed — which is the whole reason it gets set wrong. You choose your thermostat while standing in the room in normal clothes, not while lying under a duvet with your metabolic rate at its daily minimum.
Why the extremities matter
Heat loss happens disproportionately through the hands and feet, where blood vessels sit close to the surface and dilate as sleep approaches. This produces the counterintuitive result behind the warm-bath finding: a hot bath or shower an hour or two before bed tends to help sleep, not hinder it. Warming the skin drives peripheral vasodilation, which accelerates core cooling once you get out.
Same logic explains why cold feet keep people awake. Vasoconstricted extremities cannot dump heat, so core temperature stays elevated. Socks in a cold room are not a contradiction of the cold-room advice; they are how you make it work.
Practical adjustments, in order of leverage
- Lower the thermostat overnight rather than trying to cool the room at bedtime. Most programmable systems will do this and most people never set it up.
- Change bedding seasonally. A single duvet used year-round guarantees you are wrong for half of it.
- Move air. A fan at low speed helps well beyond its effect on air temperature, because evaporative loss does the work.
- Warm shower 60-120 minutes before bed. Then let the room be cold.
- Socks, if your feet run cold. Unfashionable. Effective.
Where this ranks
Temperature is not the biggest lever in sleep — schedule regularity and total time in bed are both larger. But it is close to free, it takes one evening to set up, and unlike most of what gets sold to poor sleepers it rests on straightforward, well-replicated thermoregulatory physiology.
Set the room colder than feels right while you are standing in it. That is more or less the whole intervention.
